...thanks to several of the contributors yesterday, illuminating as well.

what I saw expressed were the concerns of people who do not want to damage their fine watches more than the perhaps, the more legitimate concern of whether or not the watch would act as the manufacturer claim it should.

speaking from personal experience I have been in the water (this includes swimming in pools and oceans, some body surfing and whatnot) with several of my watches and never had a problem. the watches I have worn during this include rolex, invicta, concord, revue thommen, seiko and casio.

I cannot imagine shelling out the $500 or more for a "dive" watch and not wearing into the water (aside from one very legitimate concern expressed yesterday about expensive leather straps). the idea that a watch in this class would not survive a few hours splashing in the pool or riding the waves is bizarre to me.

that is not to say that anyone who owns a "dive" watch must be in the water. hey, if you like the look, more power to you. the idea that a watch be rated at 50 meters or more to be a good water watch seems to be more an issue of inflated water resistance ratings than physics.

thanks to all for the posts.
